    This class is great for students wanting to start or expand their upholstery skills. It is limited to 4 students for individual attention. You will be responsible for your project and all your supplies. I’ll have supplies at the workshop for purchase if needed. The piece must be approved before the class starts. You can bring your tools or use the tools I have in my workshop. I have several industrial sewing machines for students to use. I hope these workshops will help you move forward in your upholstery journey.

There are instructional webinars on how to make drapery panels, cornices, slipcovers and more. The original Drapery and Design Forum has been saved to searchable PDF’s and includes 17 years of content and over 500,000 posts. There are back issues of Sew What? Newsletter dating back to 1993 and back issues of Sew What? Magazine, The Custom Home Furnishings Academy Magazine, D&D Pro Magazine and the Drapery & Design Digital Digest from 2017 to the present.

    An ottoman is the perfect introduction to upholstery because the skills learned can be used to build confidence and progress to larger and more complex upholstery projects.

    This class includes:

    o Building an ottoman frame with pocket hole joinery

    o Fabricating the foundation with webbing, foam, and Dacron

    o How to make neat corners and proper tensioning for a professional and lasting finish

    o How to sew single welt cord

    o Using tack strip

    o Choosing fabrics and design ideas

    Students will provide their own fabric and ottoman feet. Once you are registered, the instructor will provide information on yardage needed and sources for furniture feet.  All other supplies are provided including foam, Dacron, welt cord, webbing, and lining.

    In this hands-on leather tufting upholstery workshop, you will learn specialty skills that will take your upholstery education to the next level.  You will complete three 16” x 16” tufted leather sample boards using a variety of traditional methods and techniques. The finished boards can be used as examples to show your clients, you can hang them on the wall, or you can add feet and turn them into a footstool.

    Gareth Rees has been working as an upholsterer for over 25 years. He gained his training on the shop floor, working in various workshops in England and Wales and is versed in many aspects of furniture making from cabinet work to mattress making. 

    Gareth started his own company in 2004 and in this time has taken commissions and private work for high end interior design companies, bespoke furniture makers, private collectors, antique dealers, embassies and museums.

    Here in the US, Gareth is the course writer and primary tutor for Upholstery Education, offering continuing education classes to upholstery professionals and aspiring individuals new to the trade. Back home in the United Kingdom, Gareth is a Director and full time instructor at the British School of Upholstered Furniture in Oxfordshire, UK where he teaches the Association of Master Upholsterers and Soft Furnishers (AMUSF) Diploma program. He is also the lead tutor for the Advancements in Traditional Upholstery Diploma, run in association with the Guild of Traditional Upholsterers (GTU). 

    In October 2020, Gareth was voted Chairman of the Guild of Traditional Upholsterers. In this new role, Gareth is eager to promote and celebrate the craft and trade of upholstery to a broader spectrum of people.

    Although a full time educator, Gareth still takes on commissions from select clients, predominantly focusing on the decorative arts from 1840-1950.

    On this 5 day course you will learn all about traditional upholstery.
    You will make a beautiful, hardwood, footstool from scratch. This will be webbed the traditional way, sprung with double cone springs, stuffed and stitched into perfect shape using coir and a horsehair mix.
    There will be 10 layers and you will learn the reason why all of them are so important. You will learn all about traditionally lashing springs correctly so they will last and all about the different stitching techniques involved in traditional upholstery.
    You will sculpt, tack, stitch, pin and perfect something beautiful to keep and show off.

    This course is taught by master upholsterer Polly of Polliander Studios. Polly has been an upholsterer for 16 years, she has a teaching studio in Cornwall, England. From there she carries out commissions and teaches both leisure and professional courses in upholstery and restoration. Polly is a member of the
    Association of Master Upholsters and is also an approved training centre for their Diploma course. There to assist the course is the very talented Amanda Coe. Amanda has completed her diploma training course in the UK and has been working with Bruno Paulin-Lopez for over a year. In short, you’ll be in
    good hands!
    This course is open to beginners or more advance upholsterers wanting to gain more experience and knowledge of traditional upholstery.
    The course will be held at a lovely space in Metuchen, New Jersey.
    Dates – 16th – 20th September 2024

    Cost is $1600 and that includes all materials. We only ask that you bring 1 meter of your own top fabric.

    With Nancy Letts

    Nancy Letts started Pine House Drapery in 2001 and brings over 50 years of sewing experience to provide window treatments, bedding, pillows, cushions, and slipcovers to interior designers in northern lower Michigan. In 2012, her drapery design was chosen for the Custom Home Furnishings Academy Alumni Showcase and was displayed at the International Window Coverings Expo in Chicago. Nancy taught seminars at Custom Workroom Conference for five years, starting at the first CWC in 2016, and has been teaching hands on classes at Workroom Tech since 2018. She has written articles for Drapery & Design Professional magazine and Drapery & Design Digital Digest, is a Contributing Partner at the Curtains & Soft Furnishings Resource Library, and a WCAA member.
